Charity Walk Challenge for Employees: 30-day team walking competition with GPS-tracked distance on Vantage Fit

What Is the Charity Walk Challenge?

The Charity Walk Challenge is a 30-day team-based walking program where departments or groups compete to log the highest cumulative walking and running distance over the month. Every step counts: participants track distance via GPS-enabled devices, and team totals update on a shared leaderboard throughout the challenge.

Connecting physical activity to a shared purpose, this format consistently drives stronger participation than individual-only challenges, because every team member's contribution matters.

The challenge is designed for teams, not individuals. HR groups employees by department, floor, or office location before the challenge begins. Teams can walk anywhere, at any time: during lunch breaks, commutes, and weekends. An optional symbolic charity goal in total kilometres gives the competition a sense of shared mission beyond the leaderboard.

Benefits of the Charity Walk Challenge for Employees

Walking is one of the most accessible and well-documented forms of physical activity. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity walking per week to reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

A structured team walking challenge is one of the most practical ways for HR to deliver measurable movement increases across a workforce, without requiring gym access or dedicated workout time.

  • Regular walking reduces cardiovascular risk factors including high blood pressure and elevated LDL cholesterol (American Heart Association)
  • Team accountability drives daily step counts significantly higher than individual-only challenges: no one wants to be the reason their team falls behind
  • Midday and lunchtime walks reduce afternoon energy slumps, improve mood, and support cognitive performance for the rest of the workday
  • Connecting movement to a charitable purpose adds intrinsic motivation beyond points and rankings, helping participation hold up across the full 30 days
  • Team challenges drive higher sustained participation through shared accountability. As Elsa Robertson, Senior Associate at Heidrick & Struggles, said: "The VantageFit app is a great tool for corporate walking challenges, providing users with a comprehensive platform to track their progress and stay motivated."
  • Wipro's Spirit of Wipro Step-a-thon saw 550 active participants across 30+ countries, with an 84% increase in steps between the program's first challenge and its final challenge in 2025
  • The charity framing strengthens participation beyond the first week: employees stay engaged because stepping down feels like letting both the team and the cause down
  • GPS tracking removes the manual logging burden entirely for employees with connected devices, reducing the friction that typically kills participation rates mid-challenge

How the Charity Walk Challenge Works

1

HR configures teams and the goal

The program manager sets up teams by department, floor, or location. An optional total distance goal (for example, 1,000 km to represent a symbolic route) gives the challenge a shared mission alongside the competition. Points per kilometre are set during setup.

2

Employees walk whenever it suits them

GPS-enabled devices capture walking and running distance automatically during any outdoor session. Employees with a connected device don't need to log each walk manually. Every kilometre logged by any member adds to the team's cumulative total.

3

Team totals update on the leaderboard

As distances are logged, the team leaderboard updates to show each department's total distance. Employees can check their team's ranking at any time and compare individual contributions to the team's score.

4

Points accumulate with each kilometre

Each participant earns points per kilometre walked or run during the challenge. Points feed both the individual leaderboard and the team aggregate. Midpoint milestones (like reaching 50% of the target by day 15) give teams a reason to celebrate progress.

5

The highest cumulative distance wins

At the end of 30 days, final team totals are locked. The winning team has the highest aggregate logged distance. Completers receive a challenge completion badge, and top individual contributors on each team earn a leaderboard rank badge.

Rewards and Points

Points are configured by the HR admin per kilometre (or per mile, based on your unit preference) of walking or running distance logged. Teams accumulate points based on their total logged distance across all members for the month.

Challenge Completion Badge

Awarded to every employee who logs at least one walking session during the challenge period.

Leaderboard Rank Badge

Earned by individuals finishing in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard.

Consistency Badge

Awarded to employees who maintain a consistent logging habit across the 30-day challenge.

Step Milestone Badges

Earned by hitting daily step thresholds during walks: 3,000, 5,000, 7,000, 10,000, 15,000, and 20,000+ steps per day.

Best Walk Badge

Awarded for the employee's highest single-day step count recorded during the challenge period.

Employees redeem points in the Vantage Fit rewards marketplace for gift cards, wellness products, or experiences. Points carry over and combine with points from other active challenges.

Built on Vantage Fit

Running the Charity Walk Challenge on Vantage Fit

The Charity Walk Challenge runs as a team race. Distance is captured via GPS, team totals build on a shared leaderboard, and HR sees aggregate participation across the organisation in real time.

GPS Walking/Running activity

Distance is captured via the Walking/Running GPS activity. Employees start a session when they begin walking and GPS records the route and distance automatically. For Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch, and other wearables synced to Apple Health or Google Fit, distance can sync passively without opening the app each session.

Team leaderboard

The challenge uses a team leaderboard as its primary ranking view. Teams are defined by HR at setup, and the board shows each team's cumulative logged distance in real time. HR can filter by department or location for organisations with multiple offices.

Individual leaderboard

An individual leaderboard runs alongside the team view. Employees can see both their team's rank and their personal contribution to the cumulative total, a dual layer of motivation: team pride and individual recognition.

HR dashboard

Admins see aggregate team totals, individual participation rates by department, and daily distance trends. The dashboard flags participation gaps by department, helping HR send targeted encouragement mid-challenge.

Automated notifications

Push notifications fire when teams cross key distance milestones (25%, 50%, and 75% of the target). Individuals get alerts at personal step milestones, and a wrap-up email goes to all participants at close with final rankings and contribution summaries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can remote employees participate in the charity walk challenge?

Yes. Any employee with a GPS-enabled phone or a synced wearable can participate from any location. Walks logged during lunchtime, before work, on evenings, or during weekends all count toward the team total. Employees in fully sedentary remote roles can still participate by walking during breaks or outside work hours.

How is walking distance tracked on Vantage Fit?

Distance is tracked via GPS through the Walking/Running activity in the Vantage Fit app. Employees start a walking session and GPS records the distance covered automatically. For employees using Fitbit, Apple Watch, Garmin, or other wearables synced through Apple Health or Google Fit, walking distance can also sync automatically without opening the app for each session.

How long should a charity walk challenge run?

30 days is the standard duration, providing enough time for teams to build momentum and establish a walking habit. HR can extend to 45 days for larger organisations where team onboarding takes longer, or to align the challenge with a specific awareness month or giving campaign.

What if an employee misses a day?

Missed days carry no penalty. The team total is the sum of all logged distances across all members throughout the 30-day period. Employees who miss a day can make up the gap by logging additional walks on other days. There is no streak requirement in a team race format.

How is the winning team determined?

The winning team is the team with the highest total cumulative walking and running distance at the end of 30 days. Team scores are the aggregate of all member distances logged during the challenge period. In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker is the team with the highest number of active participants, meaning members who logged at least one walking session.

Can we link the challenge to a real charity goal or donation drive?

The challenge can be configured with a symbolic total distance target that represents a charitable route or goal (for example, walking the length of a country or a famous trail), and the leaderboard shows team progress against that target. The Vantage Fit platform does not process donations directly, but the challenge sits alongside any parallel giving or fundraising program HR chooses to run independently.
