How do I track a GPS workout (run, walk, cycle)?

Updated May 12, 2026 Employee

Vantage Fit can track your outdoor workouts in real time using your phone's GPS. You get a live map, pace data, per-kilometer splits, and a detailed summary when you finish — all without needing a separate running app.

Starting a GPS Workout

  1. Tap the Plus (+) button from any screen.
  2. Select Start Outdoor Activity.
  3. Choose your activity type:
    • Run
    • Walk
    • Cycle
    • Wheelchair
  4. The app will acquire your GPS signal. Wait for the location indicator to lock on.
  5. Tap Start to begin tracking.

Tip: For the best GPS accuracy, start your workout outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Give the app a few seconds to lock onto your GPS signal before you start moving.

During Your Workout

While tracking, your screen shows live stats that update in real time:

  • Distance covered (km or miles)
  • Pace (minutes per km or mile)
  • Duration (elapsed time)
  • Calories burned

Your route is drawn on a live map as you move, so you can see exactly where you've been.

Per-Kilometer Splits

The app records a split for every kilometer (or mile) you complete. Each split shows your pace for that segment, so you can see if you're speeding up or slowing down.

iOS Live Activity (Dynamic Island)

On iPhones with Dynamic Island, your workout stats appear in a Live Activity at the top of your screen. This means you can see your distance and pace at a glance without opening the app — even from your lock screen.

Note: Live Activity requires iOS 16.1 or later and a compatible iPhone model.

Finishing Your Workout

  1. Tap Finish when you're done.
  2. You'll see a detailed Workout Summary with:
    • Your complete route drawn on a map
    • Total distance, duration, and calories
    • Average pace
    • Per-km split table with pace for each segment
    • Pace graph showing your speed over time
  1. Optionally, tap Share to post your workout to the social feed so your colleagues can see it and cheer you on.

Anti-Cheat Protections

To keep challenges fair, Vantage Fit includes built-in workout validation:

  • Pace validation — Workouts with unrealistic pace (too fast for human movement) are flagged.
  • Vehicle detection — Vantage Fit may stop a GPS workout if movement looks like vehicle travel.

These checks happen automatically. If your workout is flagged, it won't count toward challenge scores.

Note: If you believe a legitimate workout was incorrectly flagged, contact your HR admin or Vantage Fit support.

Tips for Great GPS Workouts

  • Keep your phone charged — GPS tracking uses more battery than normal. Start with at least 30% charge for longer workouts.
  • Carry your phone — GPS requires your phone to be with you. Arm bands and running belts work great.
  • Stay outdoors — GPS signal weakens indoors, in tunnels, and among very tall buildings.
  • Check permissions — Make sure Vantage Fit has location permission set to "Always" or "While Using" in your phone settings.
