Cycle to Work Challenge for Employees
Turn the daily commute into a fitness habit. Employees swap their regular commute for a bike ride, log every cycling session, and compete on a live leaderboard ranked by total distance. Works for in-office, hybrid, and remote teams.
Cycle to Work Challenge for Employees
The Cycle to Work Challenge turns the daily commute into a fitness habit. Your employees swap their regular commute for a bike ride at least a set number of days per week, log every cycling session they complete, and compete on a live leaderboard ranked by total distance.
The challenge works best for teams within cycling distance of the office. Employees who are remote or farther out join using indoor cycling sessions — a stationary bike, a cycling class, or any cycling workout counts. The leaderboard doesn't distinguish between the two. Distance is distance.
Whether your organisation is in-office, hybrid, or fully remote, the Cycle to Work Challenge delivers measurable fitness gains, real emissions data for ESG reporting, and a reason for employees to stay competitive for the full 30 days.

Benefits of the Cycle to Work Challenge
A large University of Glasgow study tracking 260,000+ commuters found that employees who cycle to work have a 41% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who commute by car or public transport. That's one of the most significant health outcomes linked to a single daily habit change.
The Cycle to Work Challenge converts that research into a measurable 30-day program — building cardiovascular fitness without adding a separate gym session to the day, while delivering a sustainability data point HR can use for ESG reporting.
- Builds cardiovascular fitness without adding a separate gym session to the day — the commute becomes the workout
- Cycling to work is linked to lower cortisol levels compared to driving in peak traffic — employees arrive already moving, not already stressed
- Saves money on fuel, parking, or public transport over 30 days
- Provides a natural energy boost before and after the workday that lunchtime walks don't quite replicate
- University of Glasgow study: employees who cycle to work have a 41% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to car or public transport commuters
- Every cycling commute logged is a verifiable emissions reduction — the challenge generates a total distance metric exportable for ESG reporting
- The department leaderboard ranked by total kilometers builds cross-department visibility and gives employees a reason to care beyond their own progress
- Cycling commuters take fewer sick days — the fitness and mental health benefits of regular cycling reduce absenteeism without adding to employees' schedules
- Fully remote-friendly — remote employees use indoor cycling sessions and appear on the same leaderboard as commuters
- One of the few wellness programs that produces a sustainability data point as a byproduct — useful for HR teams with ESG reporting obligations
- Works across in-office, hybrid, and remote configurations with no setup differences between employee types
IBS Software achieved 88% employee engagement in a 28-day multi-activity wellness challenge on Vantage Fit — 17% above the 70% industry benchmark.
See it in actionHow the Cycle to Work Challenge Works
Set up the challenge
As an HR leader or wellness coordinator, you configure the challenge with a title, a 30-day duration, and a weekly cycling frequency target for each phase. Set the point value per completed ride, choose between a frequency-based or distance-based variant, and invite employees. Enrollment can be open to your entire workforce or scoped to specific departments.
Employees record each cycling session
When an employee cycles, they record the ride capturing distance and duration in the Vantage Fit app. GPS-enabled devices automatically track route and distance for outdoor rides. Fitbit or Garmin users sync rides automatically. Indoor cycling sessions — stationary bike, cycling class, or any cycling workout — are logged manually in under 30 seconds.
Weekly frequency targets increase
Each week, the minimum cycling days expected increases by one. Employees meeting the week's target earn recognition and points. The challenge works best for teams within cycling distance of the office, but remote or farther-out employees join using indoor cycling sessions — the leaderboard treats indoor and outdoor distance equally.
Points accumulate and leaderboards go live
Each logged ride earns points based on the value you configured. Two leaderboards run simultaneously — individual rankings sorted by total points, and department rankings sorted by total kilometers cycled. Both update in real time. Mid-challenge milestones reward notable total distances and personal-best single rides.
Monitor via the HR dashboard
Throughout the 30 days, track participation rate, total distance logged by the organisation, top performers, and employees who haven't logged a single ride. That last list is useful — you can send targeted nudges to inactive participants directly from the dashboard on Day 7, before drop-off becomes permanent.

Sample Cycle to Work Challenge Plan
This is a suggested 4-week structure that builds the cycling habit progressively — each week increases the minimum cycling days by one. As an HR leader or wellness coordinator, you can customise task wording, frequency targets, and point values to match your workplace culture and commuting reality.
Week 1: First Pedal (Days 1–7)
Daily task
"Log a cycling session today."
Start. Employees aim to cycle at least 2 days this week. No distance target yet — focus is on getting the first rides logged and the habit started. Challenge Completion Badge tracking begins. Employees who haven't cycled before can start with a short indoor session to get comfortable with logging.
Milestone
Challenge Completion Badge tracking begins on Day 1. Employees who log their first ride unlock the starting point for the full completion reward.
HR Action
Send kickoff message with practical tip: suggested route, local bike map, note about secure bike parking at the office. Encourage employees to post their first ride.
Week 2: Building Rhythm (Days 8–14)
Daily task
"Log a cycling session — aim for 3 days this week."
Increase to 3 cycling days this week. The leaderboard goes live — employees can see individual standings and total team distance for the first time. Employees who cycled every day of Week 1 unlock a Consistency Badge. The public standings create the first real competitive pull of the challenge.
Milestone
Employees who cycled every day of Week 1 unlock a Consistency Badge at the start of Week 2.
HR Action
Share leaderboard screenshot mid-week. Recognise the leading department by total kilometers cycled so far.
Week 3: Distance Push (Days 15–21)
Daily task
"Log your ride — track your total kilometers."
Employees track total kilometers alongside frequency. The department leaderboard goes live alongside the individual one. A bonus point is awarded for the longest single ride of the week, rewarding employees who go further. The department standings are particularly effective when teams are close in the rankings.
Milestone
Bonus point awarded for the longest single ride of the week, rewarding employees who go further on any given day.
HR Action
Give a shoutout to the leading department by total kilometers. The department leaderboard is particularly effective when teams are close in the standings.
Week 4: Final Sprint (Days 22–30)
Daily task
"Final push — every kilometer counts."
The last push to the finish line. Employees who haven't yet hit their target days still have time to close the gap. The 30-day Challenge Completion Badge and bonus points unlock on Day 30. Completion certificates are generated automatically for every employee who meets the Week 4 frequency target.
Milestone
30-day Challenge Completion Badge and bonus points unlock on Day 30. Completion certificates generated automatically for qualifying employees.
HR Action
Announce final standings with 3 days remaining to build urgency. Name the top individual and top department in a company-wide message.
Rewards and Points
Each logged cycling session earns a configured number of points. You set the point value per ride when creating the challenge — values must be multiples of 5. Consistency and distance are the two variables that separate top participants from the rest.
Challenge Completion Badge
Awarded to employees who meet the Week 4 frequency target and complete the full 30-day cycling challenge.
Leaderboard Rank Badge
Awarded to the top 10 participants on the final individual challenge leaderboard by total points.
Consistency Badge
Awarded to employees who maintain an unbroken daily cycling streak throughout the challenge.
Points earned through the challenge are added to the employee's Vantage Points balance on Vantage Fit. Employees can redeem these points for gift cards from brands like Amazon, Starbucks, and Nike, wellness products, and other rewards through the marketplace.
Running the Cycle to Work Challenge on Vantage Fit
The Cycle to Work Challenge runs through Vantage Fit's activity tracking model, supporting GPS outdoor tracking, automatic wearable syncing, and fast manual log entry for indoor sessions — so no employee is excluded regardless of how or where they cycle.
GPS ride tracking
Outdoor rides are tracked with GPS — the app automatically records route, distance, and split times. Fitbit or Garmin users can sync rides automatically so nothing is logged twice. Indoor cycling sessions are logged manually in under 30 seconds.
Dual leaderboards
Two leaderboards run simultaneously. Total points sort individual rankings. Department rankings are sorted by total kilometers cycled. Both update in real time, creating competitive energy at the individual and team level.
HR dashboard
Participation rate, total distance logged by the organisation, top performers, and employees who haven't logged a single ride. That last list is particularly useful — you can send targeted nudges to inactive participants directly from the dashboard on Day 7, before drop-off becomes permanent.
Automated notifications
Push notifications to employees who haven't logged a ride in 48 hours. Milestone notifications fire when a badge unlocks. Wrap-up emails go out automatically when the challenge ends, including final standings and completion certificates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can remote employees participate in the Cycle to Work Challenge?
Yes. Remote employees log indoor cycling sessions — stationary bike, cycling class, or any cycling workout counts. The challenge doesn't require a commute, and the leaderboard treats indoor and outdoor distance equally. Remote employees appear on the same leaderboard as commuters.
How is cycling distance tracked?
Outdoor rides are tracked with GPS directly in the Vantage Fit app. Fitbit or Garmin users sync automatically. Indoor sessions are logged manually with distance and duration in under 30 seconds. All three methods contribute equally to the leaderboard.
How long should a Cycle to Work Challenge run?
30 days is standard — long enough to build a cycling habit, short enough to hold competitive energy. Smaller teams sometimes run it for 21 days. The 4-week progressive structure works best at full 30-day length to give the frequency targets time to build.
What if an employee misses a day?
Missing a day breaks their streak but doesn't disqualify them. They keep earning points from every ride they log. The challenge rewards total participation, not only perfect streaks. Missing days affects Consistency Badge eligibility but not overall challenge standing.
How is the winner determined?
The individual winner has the highest total points at the end of 30 days. The team winner is the department with the most total kilometers cycled. Both are recognised separately — employees compete for both honours simultaneously.
Does a hybrid commute count — bike plus train?
Yes. Any portion of the commute completed by cycling counts. Employees log it as a manual entry if the wearable doesn't capture it automatically. The distance logged is what matters, not whether the full journey was by bike.
