Digital Detox Challenge for Employees

The Digital Detox Challenge is a structured wellness program designed to help your employees reduce recreational screen time outside of work, especially before bedtime.

Over four weeks, participants gradually build longer screen-free windows each evening. During this time, they replace passive scrolling with healthier ways to unwind, such as reading, walking, stretching, or simply relaxing without a screen.

The challenge is fully self-reported, making it simple and accessible for every employee. Each day, participants complete a small task and mark it as "Done" in the app. No wearables are needed, and no biometric data is collected. This makes the challenge easy to roll out across in-office, hybrid, and remote teams alike.

How the Digital Detox Challenge Works

1

Set up the challenge

As an HR leader or wellness coordinator, you can configure the challenge with a title, duration, and daily tasks for each phase of the program. You can run it as an individual challenge or a team challenge, depending on your engagement goals. Each task focuses on a simple screen-free habit, such as avoiding screens for 30 minutes before bed. You can also assign points to each task based on participation targets.

2

Employees receive daily tasks

Each day, employees receive a simple task through the app. They complete the screen-free activity in the evening and return to log it once done.

3

Employees self-report task completion

The challenge is fully self-reported. Employees simply mark their daily task as completed in the app. No automated tracking or biometric data is involved. This helps you create a more private and low-pressure wellness experience.

4

Encourage consistency through points and leaderboards

Employees earn points for every task completed. Consistent participation helps them build streaks and improve their rankings on the leaderboard. In team format, individual points also contribute to a shared team score, adding a layer of collective motivation alongside personal progress.

5

Monitor participation through the dashboard

Throughout the challenge, you can track participation and daily task completion through the admin dashboard. This gives you visibility into engagement levels across teams and helps support wellness communication during the program.

Sample Digital Detox Challenge Plan

This four-week challenge is designed to build habits gradually. Each week introduces a slightly higher level of commitment, giving employees time to adjust before moving to the next stage. As an HR leader or wellness coordinator, you can customize task wording to match your workplace culture and goals.

Week 1: First Switch-Off (Days 1–7)

Daily task

"I avoided all screens for at least 30 minutes before bed tonight."

The first week focuses on creating one simple screen-free window before bedtime. Thirty minutes is realistic for most employees and helps break the habit of late-night scrolling. The goal is to build consistency, not perfection.

Milestone

Employees who complete the task on at least 5 out of 7 days earn their first Consistency recognition.

HR Action

Send a welcome message on Day 1 explaining what counts as screen time, what does not, and simple alternatives employees can try during the 30-minute break, such as reading, walking, or having an offline conversation.

Week 2: Longer Break (Days 8–14)

Daily task

"I avoided screens for 1 hour before bed and kept all screens off during meals today."

In Week 2, the challenge increases the screen-free window before bed to one hour. Employees also avoid using screens during meals. This helps reinforce healthier habits at multiple points during the day.

Milestone

Employees who complete their tasks consistently across Weeks 1 and 2 earn a Consistency Badge.

HR Action

Share a mid-week leaderboard update around Day 10 or 11. Highlight top participants by points and recognize employees with the longest active streaks.

Week 3: Full Evening Detox (Days 15–21)

Daily task

"I avoided screens for 2 hours before bed and replaced screen time with a physical or social activity."

In Week 3, employees extend their evening screen-free time to two hours. They also replace screen use with activities like reading, walking, stretching, or spending time with family and friends. This helps reduce the habit of automatically using a device during downtime.

Milestone

Employees who maintain a full completion streak during Week 3 earn additional Consistency recognition.

HR Action

Share a group participation update during the week. Highlight overall completion rates to encourage continued participation and reinforce momentum.

Week 4: The Digital Sabbath (Days 22–30)

Daily task

"I maintained my 2-hour evening screen-free routine and completed one extended screen-free block over the weekend."

The final week continues with the habits built in Week 3 while introducing a longer screen-free period over the weekend. This can be a half-day or full-day break from recreational screen use. The goal is to help employees turn short-term actions into lasting habits.

Milestone

Employees who complete the challenge earn the Challenge Completion Badge. The top 10 participants on the leaderboard receive the Leaderboard Rank Badge.

HR Action

Send a wrap-up message at the end of the challenge. Include leaderboard results, participation highlights, and recognition for employees who completed the program.

Keep them motivated

Built on Vantage Fit

Running the Digital Detox Challenge on Vantage Fit

The Digital Detox Challenge runs through Vantage Fit's custom campaign challenge format. This supports multi-week wellness programs with self-reported daily tasks.

Self-reported task tracking

Since screen time cannot be tracked automatically, employees complete tasks using a simple mark-as-done format. HR leaders can configure task descriptions during setup. Employees complete the activity and log it in the app once finished.

Task and points setup

Tasks can be configured weekly or daily, depending on how detailed the program needs to be. Points are assigned in multiples of 5. Many organizations increase point values in Weeks 3 and 4 to encourage participation during the more challenging stages.

HR dashboard and participation insights

The admin dashboard gives visibility into participation trends and daily completion rates across teams or departments. This helps HR leaders monitor engagement and send targeted reminders or updates during the challenge.

Automated reminders

The platform sends automatic reminders to employees to complete their daily tasks. HR admins can also send manual notifications to encourage participation and re-engage employees when needed.
