Time to Wind Down Challenge — pre-sleep evening routine for employee sleep recovery

What Is the Time to Wind Down Challenge?

The Time to Wind Down Challenge is a 30-day sleep recovery program designed to help employees build a consistent pre-sleep routine. Each evening, participants complete one relaxing activity before bed.

Activities can include a guided sleep or relaxation audio session, screen-free reading, journaling, gentle stretching, or any other intentional wind-down practice. Employees record their completion each day and earn points for staying consistent.

The challenge does not focus on sleep metrics or performance targets. Instead, it encourages one simple habit: creating a dedicated wind-down period before bed and practicing it consistently for 30 days.

How the Time to Wind Down Challenge Works

1

Launch the challenge

As an HR leader or wellness coordinator, you launch the challenge for 30 days and define the qualifying wind-down activities. You can invite the entire workforce or target specific teams, departments, or locations.

2

Employees complete their evening routine

Each evening, employees complete one relaxing pre-sleep activity — a guided relaxation session, screen-free reading, journaling, gentle stretching, or any other calming routine that fits their lifestyle.

3

Employees log completion

After completing the activity, employees mark the task as done in the app. Some activities, such as guided audio sessions from the mindfulness library, may also include optional tracking of session duration.

4

Points build through consistency

Employees earn points for every completed evening routine. Consistent participation helps them climb the leaderboard over the 30-day challenge period. Daily consistency determines leaderboard rankings, not the type or length of the activity.

5

Recognize participation and consistency

At the end of the challenge, top participants receive leaderboard recognition. Employees who complete the full challenge or maintain strong completion streaks earn badges and Vantage Points rewards.

Sample Time to Wind Down Challenge Plan

This is a suggested 4-week structure. You configure the qualifying activities and point values in the admin portal before launch.

Week 1: Establish the Evening Routine (Days 1–7)

Phase goal

"Complete one calming activity before bed each night — any qualifying activity counts."

The focus is on showing up consistently, not on a specific activity type or duration. Employees who have found their preferred wind-down activity should start there.

Milestone

Employees who complete at least 5 out of 7 evenings in Week 1 establish the consistency baseline that the rest of the challenge builds on.

HR Action

Send a Day 1 welcome message with examples of qualifying wind-down activities. Encourage employees to start with whatever feels easiest, such as a guided sleep session from the mindfulness library or a short journaling practice.

Week 2: Strengthen the Habit (Days 8–14)

Phase goal

"Build toward a full 7-day streak — practice the same wind-down activity every evening."

Employees who have found their preferred wind-down activity should aim to practice it every evening this week. Leaderboard competition begins to take shape as consistent participants accumulate points.

Milestone

Employees who log every evening across Weeks 1 and 2 earn Consistency Badge recognition.

HR Action

Share a mid-week leaderboard update on Day 10 or 11. Highlight employees with the strongest streaks and remind the team that the Consistency Badge requires daily completion across the full 30 days.

Week 3: Maintain the Momentum (Days 15–21)

Phase goal

"Carry the habit through the middle stretch — leaderboard competition intensifies."

Consistent participants pull ahead on the leaderboard. The challenge is no longer about starting the habit — it's about sustaining it through the midpoint.

Milestone

Employees who maintain a full completion streak through Weeks 2 and 3 earn additional streak recognition.

HR Action

Share a group participation update during the week showing total sessions logged and progress toward the final week.

Week 4: Complete the Challenge (Days 22–30)

Phase goal

"Finish strong through to Day 30 — every completed evening adds to the final standings."

Employees in close leaderboard positions often increase consistency in the final week. The goal is to carry the evening routine through to the end and make it a lasting habit beyond the challenge.

Milestone

Challenge Completion Badge awarded to every employee who meets the completion criteria. Leaderboard Rank Badge awarded to the top 10 by total points.

HR Action

Send a Day 30 wrap-up message with final leaderboard standings, total evenings completed across the organization, and recognition for every employee who finished the challenge.

Keep them motivated

Rewards and Points

Every completed evening routine earns points. As an HR leader, you set the point value during challenge setup in multiples of 5. The challenge rewards consistency rather than performance — employees complete their chosen wind-down routine, log it, and earn points for showing up each evening.

Challenge Completion Badge

Awarded to employees who complete the full 30-day challenge.

Leaderboard Rank Badge

Awarded to the top 10 employees on the final leaderboard.

Consistency Badge

Awarded to employees who maintain a daily completion streak throughout the challenge.

Employees earn Vantage Points for each completed evening routine and can redeem them for gift cards from Amazon, Starbucks, Nike, and hundreds of other brands in the rewards marketplace.

Built on Vantage Fit

Running the Time to Wind Down Challenge on Vantage Fit

The Time to Wind Down Challenge runs through the Custom (Multi-Activity) challenge format in Vantage Fit. Employees complete their evening wind-down activity and mark the daily task as done in the app.

Mindfulness library with guided sessions

Employees can access guided audio sessions directly within the app — including sleep meditations, body scan exercises, body awareness sessions, compassion sessions, and white noise audio such as jungle sounds, ocean waves, and rain. All sessions are available offline.

Self-reported task tracking

Employees complete their evening routine and mark the daily task as done in the app. There is no automatic tracking or wearable requirement. Individual routines and session choices remain private — only aggregate participation data is visible to HR admins.

HR dashboard and participation insights

As an HR leader, you can view overall participation trends and daily completion rates through the admin dashboard. Individual mindfulness sessions, activity choices, and session durations remain private to employees. The dashboard shows program-level engagement only.

Automated reminders

The platform sends automatic reminders to encourage employees to complete their evening routine. Milestone alerts fire when employees hit streak milestones. At challenge close, a wrap-up message with final standings is automatically sent to all participants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can remote employees participate?

Yes. The Time to Wind Down Challenge is fully remote-friendly. Employees can complete their evening routine from home, while traveling, or during a work trip. There are no location-based activities or facility requirements.

What counts as a qualifying wind-down activity?

As an HR leader, you can define qualifying activities during challenge setup. Common options include guided sleep or relaxation sessions from the mindfulness library, screen-free reading or journaling, gentle stretching, Yoga Nidra, or any other intentional pre-sleep relaxation activity.

How is the wind-down routine tracked on Vantage Fit?

Employees complete their evening routine and mark the daily task as done in the app. HR admins only see aggregate participation and completion rates. Individual session choices, activity types, and personal routines remain private to employees.

What happens if an employee misses a day?

Missing one day does not remove employees from the challenge. They miss out on points for that day and their streak resets. Employees can continue normally from the next day. Employees who meet the required completion threshold can still qualify for the Challenge Completion Badge.

How is the winner determined?

The winner is the employee with the highest total points at the end of the 30-day challenge. Employees earn points for each completed evening routine, so consistent participation plays the biggest role in leaderboard rankings.

How long should the Time to Wind Down Challenge run?

A 30-day format works best because it gives employees enough time to build a consistent habit around evening recovery and relaxation. A shorter 14-day version can also work well for awareness campaigns linked to World Sleep Day or National Sleep Awareness Week.
