Lunch Walk Challenge for Employees
A 21-day team challenge that turns the lunch break into a daily movement habit. Every employee's steps add to the team score. Remote, in-office, and hybrid employees all participate equally.
What Is the Lunch Walk Challenge?
The Lunch Walk Challenge is a 21-day team program that encourages employees to take a walk during their lunch break each day. Every employee's steps add to the team score, and teams compete on the leaderboard based on cumulative steps across all members.
In-office employees can walk together, while remote and hybrid employees can walk on their own, with everyone's steps counting equally toward the total. The challenge needs only a smartphone or wearable, works across all work arrangements, and helps build a steady midday movement habit through friendly team competition.
Any step count qualifies, so both a short 10-minute stroll and a brisk 30-minute walk contribute to the team total — making this one of the most accessible activity challenges available.

See it in actionHow the Lunch Walk Challenge Works
Assign teams and set up the challenge
You assign employees to teams by department, office location, or cross-functional group in the Vantage Fit admin portal. Each participant receives their team assignment, the challenge start date, and how steps will be tracked before launch.
Employees walk during their lunch break
Each day, employees take a walk during their lunch break. Steps are automatically tracked via a connected wearable — Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch, or an Android phone via Google Fit. Manual entry is also available for employees without a device.
Steps add to the team total
Every employee's steps contribute to the team's cumulative score. The leaderboard ranks teams by combined steps, so consistent daily participation from each member builds momentum. Employees can compare their team's standing against other teams throughout the challenge.
Weekly milestones keep engagement high
At the end of each week, teams with the highest cumulative step totals earn milestone recognition. Individual employees whose daily step counts rank near the top of the individual leaderboard earn additional standing.
Final rankings and recognition at Day 21
After 21 days, teams are ranked by total combined steps. The highest-scoring team wins. Employees who meet the minimum activity requirement receive completion recognition, and individual top performers earn Leaderboard Rank Badges.

Sample Lunch Walk Challenge Plan
This is a suggested 3-week structure. You configure point values and team assignments in the admin portal before launch.
Week 1: Build the Habit (Days 1–7)
Phase goal
"Establish a daily lunchtime walk habit across your teams."
Each team member walks during lunch and logs their steps in Vantage Fit. Any step count qualifies, making this week accessible to everyone regardless of their usual activity level.
Milestone
Teams that log at least five days of steps per member in Week 1 earn early leaderboard momentum.
HR Action
Send a kickoff message with team assignments and leaderboard access. Encourage in-office employees to walk together and remote employees to find a local walking route.
Week 2: Build Team Momentum (Days 8–14)
Phase goal
"Sustain the daily walk habit while driving competitive engagement."
Teams can see mid-challenge leaderboard standings. Encourage members to set a personal step target for their lunch walk and to share their routes or walking spots on the social feed.
Milestone
Teams that complete two consecutive weeks of consistent step logging earn mid-challenge recognition.
HR Action
Share the mid-challenge leaderboard across the organization. Highlight the teams with the biggest cumulative step gains since Week 1 to energize the final push.
Week 3: Finish Strong (Days 15–21)
Phase goal
"Sustain daily walking through the final week and make the last push on the leaderboard."
Teams make their last push on the cumulative steps leaderboard. Individual members who log steps on at least 18 of the 21 days earn the Consistency Badge.
Milestone
The team with the highest combined step total at the end of Day 21 wins. All members who meet the completion threshold receive the Challenge Completion Badge.
HR Action
Send a final-week push with current team standings. Announce the winning team and all badge recipients in a company-wide message at challenge close.
Rewards and Points
Points in the Lunch Walk Challenge are earned for every step logged each day. You set the points-per-step rate when configuring the challenge. Consistent daily logging earns more than occasional high-step days.
Challenge Completion Badge
Awarded to all employees who complete the required minimum daily logs across the 21 days.
Leaderboard Rank Badge
Awarded to employees who finish in the top 10 on the individual step leaderboard.
Consistency Badge
Awarded to employees who log steps on at least 18 of 21 days, recognizing sustained daily participation.
Employees can redeem Vantage Points in the rewards marketplace for gift cards from brands like Amazon, Starbucks, and Nike, as well as wellness products and experiences. Points also carry over and combine with points from other active challenges.
Running the Lunch Walk Challenge on Vantage Fit
Configure the Lunch Walk Challenge from the Vantage Fit admin portal as a Race (Steps) challenge with team leaderboard enabled. Setup takes under 20 minutes.
Step tracking via app and wearable
Steps sync automatically from connected devices, including Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch through Apple Health, and Android devices through Google Fit. Employees without a wearable can still log steps through a smartphone pedometer or enter them manually. Every source contributes to the same team total.
Team and individual leaderboards
Both a team leaderboard (cumulative steps by team) and an individual leaderboard (steps per employee) are available. Employees can switch between views to see how their team is performing and how they are personally doing. HR admins can download both views for reporting.
HR dashboard and participation data
The HR dashboard provides real-time daily step totals by team, per-employee participation rates, and weekly progress summaries. It also flags unusually high daily step counts above 50,000 for review, keeping the challenge fair and accurate.
Automated notifications
Daily push notifications remind employees to log their lunch walk steps. Milestone alerts keep them motivated when they reach targets such as 5,000 or 10,000 steps. At challenge close, every participant receives a wrap-up summary with final team rankings and badge recipients.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can remote employees participate in the Lunch Walk Challenge?
Yes. Remote, hybrid, and in-office employees can all take part equally. Remote employees can walk at home or in their neighborhood during lunch, and their steps count the same as everyone else's toward the team total.
How are steps tracked for the Lunch Walk Challenge?
Steps sync automatically from Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch through Apple Health, or Android phones through Google Fit. Employees can also log steps manually in the app. You can view totals per employee regardless of tracking method.
Does the walk have to happen exactly at lunchtime?
No. The challenge is designed to encourage midday movement, but employees can log steps at any time during the day. You can keep the timing flexible or frame lunch as the preferred window in your kickoff communication.
How long should a Lunch Walk Challenge run?
21 days is the recommended duration. That gives employees enough time to build a habit and create healthy competition, while 14 or 30 days can also work depending on your goals.
How is the winning team determined?
Teams are ranked by the total combined steps across all members over the full 21 days. This setup rewards steady participation across the group, not just a few high-step performers.
What if an employee forgets to log their steps?
A missed day does not remove an employee from the challenge. Employees can back-fill past steps if they forget to sync, and anyone who logs steps on at least 18 of 21 days earns the Consistency Badge. Encouraging employees to update missed days early in the week helps keep badge eligibility on track.
