What Does Health Connect Do on Android?

Updated May 12, 2026 Employee

Health Connect is Android's health data hub. Vantage Fit uses it for supported health data like workouts, sleep, and heart rate.

For steps, Vantage Fit uses Google Fit on Android unless you connect Fitbit or Garmin.

What is Health Connect?

Health Connect lets health and fitness apps share data with your permission. Workouts, sleep, heart rate, and other supported health data can flow into Vantage Fit when access is granted.

Without Health Connect, some Android health import features may not work. Step syncing still uses the step source selected in Vantage Fit.

Android Version Health Connect Status
Android 14+ Built in — comes pre-installed, no action needed
Android 13 Available as a free download from the Google Play Store
Android 9-12 Available as a free download from the Google Play Store
Below Android 9 Not supported — consider using Google Fit instead

Note: If you are on Android 13 or below and do not have Health Connect installed, search for "Health Connect" in the Google Play Store and install it before continuing.

Granting Health Connect Permissions

  1. Make sure Health Connect is installed on your phone. On Android 14+, it is already there. On older versions, install it from the Play Store.
  1. Open Vantage Fit and navigate to Settings
  1. Tap "Device Management"
  1. Tap "Health Connect" in the device list, then tap "Connect"
  1. Android's permission dialog appears — Health Connect asks you to grant Vantage Fit access to specific health data categories. You may see checkboxes for:

    • Exercise / Workouts (read + write)
    • Sleep (read + write)
    • Distance (read + write)
    • Heart Rate (read + write)

Grant access to all categories for the best experience.

  1. Tap "Allow" to confirm permissions

  2. Health data begins syncing — Vantage Fit reads supported health data from Health Connect. Depending on how much data is available, this may take a few seconds to a minute.

Note: This permission screen is for supported Health Connect features. Step totals use the step source selected in Vantage Fit.

How Syncing Works After Setup

Once connected, your data syncs at these times:

When What Happens
When you open Vantage Fit Immediate step sync from the connected Android step source
Automatic update Android can update in the background when battery settings allow it
Manual sync Tap Sync from the Plus (+) menu anytime you want the latest data

Open Vantage Fit when you want the latest step total to appear immediately. If Android updates seem delayed, check your phone's battery settings for Vantage Fit.

Note: For the most up-to-date step count, open the app or use the manual Sync option. If even that is not working, check your battery optimization settings.

What Data Flows Through Health Connect

Data Type Direction Details
Distance Health Connect → Vantage Fit Walking and running distance in km or miles
Workouts Both directions Type, duration, distance, calories burned
Sleep Health Connect → Vantage Fit Sleep start/end times, sleep stages if available
Heart Rate Health Connect → Vantage Fit Readings from your phone or wearable
Weight Both directions Manual weight logs sync between apps
Calories Health Connect → Vantage Fit Active energy estimate

If You Accidentally Denied Permissions

If you tapped "Deny" on the permission dialog, you can grant access manually:

  1. Open your phone's Settings app
  2. Search for "Health Connect" (or navigate to Apps → Health Connect)
  3. Tap App permissions (or Connected apps)
  4. Find Vantage Fit in the list
  5. Tap on it and enable all the data categories you want to share

Note: Vantage Fit cannot re-trigger the permission dialog after you have denied it. You must grant access through your phone's Settings app.

Health Connect and Your Wearable

If you use a wearable that shares workouts, sleep, or heart rate with Health Connect, that data may be available to Vantage Fit after you grant permission.

For steps, use the device connection options in Vantage Fit.

For this to work, make sure your wearable's companion app is configured to write data to Health Connect. Most modern companion apps do this by default, but it is worth checking:

  1. Open your wearable's companion app (Samsung Health, Zepp Life, Huawei Health, etc.)
  2. Look in its Settings for a Health Connect option
  3. Enable data sharing with Health Connect

Troubleshooting

Health Connect is not appearing in Vantage Fit's Device Management

  • Make sure Health Connect is installed (check Play Store)

Steps are not showing

  • Check the Android step source selected in Vantage Fit, usually Google Fit unless Fitbit or Garmin is connected
  • Try a manual sync: Plus (+) menu → Sync

  • Open your phone's Settings → Health Connect → App permissions → Vantage Fit, and verify all data types are enabled
  • Restart your phone and open Vantage Fit
